Snow in Paris is not a real problem. You can still enjoy the city with only a minimal amount of discomfort. Transportation is still available, fresh food is still at your markets, warm baguettes and almond croissants smells still waft by urging you into a boulangerie.

Museums are great places to escape from the cold,

Centre Pompidou

along with the “Secret Passages”, and the Grand Magazines,
Au Printemps and Galleries Layfayette for you right bankers, and Bon Marche for those who prefer to wander the left bank.

Seeking out a Salon de thé is la rigeur ... unless you are wanting a more serious experience ... I’m referring to a café and cognac .. or visiting the latest craze of delicious barista coffee houses.

Plus, wearing fur-lined boots feels so good!

Snow...pas de problem!

Partager the Day at Jardin du Luxembourg

Whenever I need a stroll, I find myself on Bus 82 , heading for the Jardin du Luxembourg. I find it to be one of the most entertaining, restores my soul, and great photo ops - type of place. Sunning, strolling, eating, and just plain day-dreaming is what you can enjoy here. The fountain at the heart of the park is surrounded by those lovely green metal chairs, perfect for watching the clouds go by ... or catching the latest fashions saunter by ... lovers walking arm in arm. The elegant formal gardens allow you to feel a bit like royalty during your stay.
I highly recommend the canelle, citron, or chestnut spread crepes ... there are many stands and cafés that you will find on your walk through the garden, while witnessing the serious chess tournaments or bridge games, pony rides, tai-chi, ... just to to name a few activities that are always available for viewing ...

The bandstand, on the east side of the park, near the large café, usually has music and dancing that I’m often tempted to join in the dancing or the singing ... if I only knew the words, the dancing I could make up ... oh , and I almost forgot ...

Paris’ oldest museum, The Musee du Luxembourg, is hidden away in a corner of the park. The museum where I fell deep in love with Lalique.

There is plenty to do for young and old alike, summer or winter, so here’s some of the highlights of the park, not to be missed!

Lêche Vitrine

window licking in the 5th arrondissement

Much of my free time, I spend wandering around ... Léche vitrine, or licking windows ... as the french say so appropriately. The windows of the small stores in the 5th arrondissement are works of art, sculptures of merchandise, continually changing, vitrine in cours, visions of inspiration ... I could go on ... this vitrine had that special something that caught my eye ... how much is that kitty in the window?

While in Paris, remember to take some time to wander and appreciate the quiet surprises waiting for you.

A day by the canal ... In Paris, you run into surprises all the time. I think it should be called the city of Surprises, along with the City of Lights...thank you Jim Morrison.

The day was to start with some fellow photogs; a tour alongside the canal to visit some photo expositions that had been organized by fellow photographers more industrious than me. They were staggered alongside the canal of La Villette, also known as the Canal de L'Ourcq.

Before we could make it to the first exposition, we were surrounded by music and lots of Pink ... yes, for a good cause, these lovely guys were playing their hearts out. Pulling ourselves away from the tunes, we tromped en masse to the first of many expositions just off the canal, weaving ourselves around these little streets, following the leader's baton, passing by the old and new buildings, married side-by-side, a 5-block, at least!, brocante/vide-greniers (Parisien style garage sales), then after enjoying, observing, listening to the inspiration leading to these expositions, we circled our way back to the canal.

Now here is the surprise! Near the end of our tour, we found a festival of the regions of France celebrating their specialities. The stands, end to end, with many tables, family-style, covered the whole end of the pavement, along with a huge smiling (and chewing happily) crowd. Each of us rambled off to our favorite region, tasting several along the way ... guess which regions I visited? Yes, the champagne and chocolate regions were first!!

Take some time to visit the canal at La Villette when you are here; there is always something going on... Its another one of those secret places of Paris, that is definitely off the tourist paths. A great place to spend the day with your camera.

There is a lovely large restaurant called La Rotonde de la Villette, old customs office, that could be a good place to end the day ... enjoy the view of the bassin de la Villette, or if you catch it just right, the perfect place to catch la coucher de soleil, sunset, with a very chilled glass of champagne...

Another lovely end to a lovely day in Paris.

Partager Paris - Vendanges des Montmarte

A celebration that has been held every year since 1934 to celebrate the harvesting of the grapes at the foot of Montmarte.

Our Photo Meet-up group courageously cheered the parade along as it wound its way around the petits rues of Montmarte. Although it was a bit cloudy and rain visited us a few times, the day was kept bright and shiny with the help of the Island dancers, drummers, and the sips of delicious wine along the way!

It is held every year, usually the first weekend of October, so make you plans now! Keep a check on next year’s agenda and come and join in the fun!

Partager Jardin des Plantes's Secret Spots .....

The Jardin des Plantes, also known as the Medicinal Garden of the King, located in the 5th arrondissement, is a well-known place, well trod by the gens who live nearby. It is the main botanical garden in France, covering 24 hectares, 235,000 square meters, or easier for some of us to grasp ... 69 acres. In 1626, Louis XIII was confronted by botanist and king’s doctor Jean Hérouard, for the need of a garden for medicines and research. It was then open to the public in 1640.

Les Grandes Serres

I have been there many times, but it wasn’t until mon amie asked if I had ever visited the Alpine Garden and other “secret” corners of this famous place ... that I realized I had only skimmed the surface of flowers to admire and the caché places to be found here.

Our visit was to begin with the newly reopended Les Grandes Serres, or HotHouses (more to come ...), we headed in their direction. After circling the gardens for the entrance to the green houses, we find they are closed on Tuesdays! A quick decision was made to continue our day there, visiting the "hidden" areas of the garden that mon amie had promised me. We headed in search of the Alpine Jardin. What a wonderful surprise of over 3,000 different species of world-wide mountain plantes and flowers (from the Alpes, Pyrénées, Corsica, Balkans, Maroc, and Himolayans) hidden between the zoo and greenhouses ... AND, Personne, no one, was there! just us! The gardens have small paths which circle aound, up and down, just like you are doing a bit of mountain hiking in the middle of Paris! I felt like yodeling just a little, but I was afraid I would scare the deers seen peaking thru the fence ...

The Alpin Garden can be visited every day, but a TIP ... if you go during the week you can enter free of charge! If you happen to visit on the weekend, look for the ticket booth for the Hothouses. You can buy your tickets there.

The Alpine Garden will be closed at the end of October,so take some time to visit now!

ELEGIAC : Relating to the mourning or remembering of the dead, expressing sorrow.

I’m pretty sure that everyone remembers where they were on September 11, 2001.

The moment is sealed into your memory, into a place that can be recalled in a single heartbeat. I can still feel, see and smell the moment. I was in Hull, England, whiling the day away. Turning the corner, a bright light caught my eye as I passed an electronics store on one of the small streets, witnessing the blast and then the Towers going down. Smoke.... Smoke, the flurry of all that were near. Surely this is the latest movie trailer, I thought ... but the coverage was too real for that; my fears were mounting. After several minutes of staring, watching the same scene over and over ... I realized this has happened, this HAS really happened. No movie, no wild, sick imagination from some Hollywood somebody trying to top the latest disaster film. C’est absolument vrai.

So far in my life, I have been fortunate to have never felt the lag of time that occurs when disaster envelopes you. I was suspended in that repeated scene, not knowing what to do. I was far from home, and seeing disaster around every corner. I blanked as to my next move.

Then the thoughts of those; those thousands , millions of people whose lives would never be the same after those few moments .... after this massive intrusion upon US soils, the workplaces, the vie quotidian, the future thoughts, the futures that would never be ... The sadness, the fury, the disbelief, the nausea that jumped upon us all as New York, the emblem city, had been ravaged by who and why? How can anyone begin to know how to handle this?

We are required to move on, to make tragedies a new start, yet, all the while, remembering that this did happen, and that our lives should reflect our tragedies as well as our best moments. May our best moments take hold of our lives.

Today is an elegiac day.

Partager La Rentrée

La Rentrée (defined as the reopening, reassembly, reappearance) is happening as I write... the truly french phenomena of everyone returning back to Paris to start the new school year. The rhythm of the city returns.

Time for new resolutions, new decorations, new shoes!...

It is more like the NEW YEAR than the actual New Year. The excitement is palpable. You are ready to join in and up with a clean slate for the next 10 months. Lives begin anew and tous le monde are busy organizing their lives, their children’s lives, and even their pets’ lives.

I have also joined the annual frenzy with my agenda out .... penciling in the english classes I will be teaching; trying to compose the perfect french email to begin (once again) the french classes that will make my life so much richer; making promises to myself about my seriousness to paint on a regular basis and other equally important self-improvement activities; and I am still in search of that perfect cross of Yoga, stretch and relaxation class. Does it exist? ahhh, the promise of good things to come ...

And all the while, remembering the days of summer ... L’Yonne in the Burgundy region kept us entertained with its Vignobles in Chablis, Auxerre, and Vézelay, the Mohair d'Armançon, Vide Greniers (empty the attic sales), and the rolling green hills dotted with cows ...

I love Paris in August. It is calm, it is mostly quiet, and there are many parking spaces.
There are a few drawbacks to this simplicity of life, though ... which are baguettes are a bit harder to find, many of my favorite restaurants are closed, along with those specialty shops I love to doddle in, and the lines at the Louvre may be long ... ...

But, the good news is that the fresh markets are always there, as scheduled....

some are open every single day.
A real something to celebrate.

Thanks Rue Cler and all the other markets in Paris (thanks Bonjour Paris) for making our lives so much better and our summer picnics delicious!

L'Institut Du Monde Arab

Its always nice when one of your friends has a birthday; it is a bit like having a birthday yourself. So, the other day when one of my buddies had a birthday, I sought her out to celebrate the day with her. I gave her a few options of things that might be fun, and she chose the L’institut de Monde Arab. I was great with that, since I hadn’t been there in quite a while, and forgotten most of what was there to explore, besides the gift shop, of course.

The Institut du Monde Arab, aka Arab World Institute, is a beautiful, modern building that sits near the river in the 5th arrondisement. Built in 1980 when 18 Arab countries made an agreement with France to establish somewhere to provide information about the Arab world - its cultural and spiritual values, and also to promote cooperation and cultural exchanges between France and Arab world.

After deciding that lunch should be the first thing on our, whoops, her, birthday agenda, we headed up in the trés modern, and way to fast for my friend, open glass elevator. You can see all around as you fly up to the 9th floor to the restaurant, Naoura.

The view from this restaurant is really incredible, but unfortunately I will have to say that that was the best part of the dining venture. I had called and reserved, which I thought was the way to get a bit better treatment, but instead we were given a table in the full sun with no umbrella. OK, that’s not the worse thing in the world when the sun has been hiding, but it was the only real "warmth" we received while we were there. The servers were not warm at all ... but instead, cool, aloof, and rather selfish with their time and food, and not even a small cookie or chocolate with the after meal café! But, that was only part of our plan for the day; and we are not easily dissuaded from enjoying ourselves, so we continued on ... Dejeuner being over, we decided to wander around the museum to see what was there to see in our remaining hours of our visit ...

The museum usually has several different exhibitions for visiting. We chose the “le Mobile Art,” an architectural adventure, by Zaha Hadid, which was sponsored in part by Chanel. This 600 m2 exhibition, already presented in Hong-Kong, Tokyo, and New York, reflects her modern approach with curving, elongated, completely mobile, structures, in and out. To me, this building represents the future approach to always feeling at home as we become more and more mobile in our lives, yet we still want to have our own belongings with us wherever we go. Inside this large, airy mobile building, I felt like I was exploring the inside of some large insect with its webbed walls directing my steps, following the light bathing the curved walls and shiny floors.

Zaha Hadid was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She was born in Iraq in 1950, a time when Modernism connoted glamor and progressive thinking in the Middle East, and was raised in one of Baghdad's first Bauhaus-inspired houses. She is certainly a visionary with all of her creations, along with using touches of biomimicry in her decorative creations.

The exhibition will run through September, so you still have time to visit this interesting piece of architecture, even more interesting at dusk ....

Take some time to check out the permanent exhibition, the library, cafe, boutique, restaurants, concerts, language lessons, and don’t forget to sign up for the Calligraphy lessons you can take there!

The day couldn’t have been more lovely ... the sun was out, the clouds were painted onto a summer-time blue sky. We arrived with our sandwiches and pastries from the market in Malmaison ...( nice market I would like to add! plenty of everything and some of the best clothes I have found at a market). We paid our pittance of an entry fee into Josephine's’ beloved Malmaison, ... and wandered to one of the rose gardens to spread our goodies out for a summer impromptu picnic. Life can be so good some days it can scare you ...

Doing the tour backwards, as I am known to do .. we enjoyed the outside discovery garden, and then entered the beautiful 17th century mansion that Josephine bought (without Napoleon’s permission). Slowly we discovered the three floors full of Josephine and Napoleon’s life together. After appreciating the authentic character furnishings, reliving the atmosphere of these times, and trying to imagine the love shared between Napoleon and Josephine. Why did it have to go so wrong?

The chateau had a difficult history, but Josephine changed these negative connotations of her new home by allowing her passions for decorating and furnishings to make it a real home for her and her family. She showed her love for nature in the surrounding six hectare park by planting a cedar tree, known as Marengo, antique roses, and maintaining a naturally wild field for losing oneself amongst the statures, rivers and cascades.

An idyllic day, stepping back into time ...
highly recommended if you would like to slip away from Paris for the day.

Partager Paris and More ... Pleasure Grove

Dad's tomatoes

I'm back. I've been back for a couple of weeks now.

My time away was good, ... more like fullfilling, a bit too hot, but its good to sweat and feel the warmth of everything around you, too much to eat, never can get enough of my mom's cabbage and cornbread, canoeing with my Dad, beautiful sunsets, prayers for rain as we rock by the lake's shrinking edge, the family of sandhill cranes that dance at sunset and cry you awake at dawn, rides in my father's pickup truck, sadness at the loss of our favorite grapefruit tree, hanging laundry out on the line, looking for slimy, nearly chartreuse treefrogs in the greenhouse, screaming when spiders manage to surprise me, watching my dad take naps, watching my mom as she sits and watches my dad, the happiness of seeing my sisters walk thru the back door, reading "Out of Africa" once again, seeing my presence even when I am so far away .....

Ohh, and eating my dad's tomatoes. Truly delicious. Just cut up with a sprinkle of salt.

So nice to see Mr. T again. The next few weeks I will be reliving the last few weeks ...

A note to say its time to take a trip from one side of the world to the next ....

This is the view from our trés bons amis terrace near Geneva ... if you look hard you can see the tip of Montblanc. What a wonderful way to start the day! So, another wonderful city to visit easily from Paris.

So, I say good bye to this and the view from my window ... just for a few weeks, and on to the view from my parents' terrace and their lake ... also a wonderful way to start any day!

Will catch up on summer fun in Paris when I return ...

Guess where I have been? I have finally made it to Istanbul! It was all and more than I ever expected.

It is the city to "Leave the world ... Feel the moment".

From the southern tip of Kumkapi, near the shores of the Sea of Marmara and the fishermen's village, across the south of the Golden Horn, across the Bosphorous Sea via the Galata Bridge, up the Tunel to the hip area of Beyoglu, on the ferry to Harem Bus Terminal and back to the Orient Express Train Station, through the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, up and down the many floors of the photgraphy stores on the main streets, watched my husband get one of the best shaves of his life, ... explored each alleyway of the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market, searched for the best Kofte (we all voted for Tarihi Sultamahmet Koftecisi) ... and at the end of each day, cocktails on the rooftop terrace of the Pierre Loti, or our cordial hotel, the Ottoman Hotel Park (highly recommended if you like to stay a bit out; in a more familial neighborhood) ... now a mosaic of images, scents, colors, warm generous people, everywhere ... , CARPETS, art, bargaining, tea cups passing on trays in the street ..
I already feel the need to return ... so much we did, and so much left to do ....

I wasn't the only person from Paris visiting .. it looks as though Paris Imperfect was there at the very same time ... maybe we were sitting across from each other on one of the many ferries, or eating a delicious Kadayif or Kundfe pastry and sipping cay?

It was my trip of a lifetime,

Partager Paris Surprises

Private Concert

That is the "thing" about Paris ... as I have appreciated many times in the past ... you just never know what is waiting for you around the next corner ...

We received an email from one of Mr. T's virtual friends on Flickr on Saturday inviting us to a chamber music concert to be held in a friend's home the next day.. We automatically agreed since music is one of those things you never turn down. After finally getting the time and address, porte code, etage (floor) of the building, etc., we headed over to the 3rd arrondisement. Not really knowing what to expect, how long this might last, ... should we have brought a gift .... (I really think we should've) ... we arrived along with around 20 other people. The apartment was on the 5th etage, and not liking elevators, we hiked up, caught our breath and pushed open the already open door. Chairs were set around everywhere, and a beautiful black baby grand was sitting proudly at the end of the room. Looking a bit closer, just beyond the piano, I could see the outline of la Tour Eiffel framed in the window of the next apartment. For the next 3 hours we were entertained by Mr. T's friend, the pianist, and his partner, a cellist. Beethoven has never sounded so good! And of course, the evening ended around des coups de champagne! Another nice surprise in Paris!

Partager Parc Sceaux

Its not too late to enjoy this year's cherry blossoms ... if you have a bit of time, jump on the RER station to Sceaux, head to the Petit Chateau, and take a right down towards the fountain ... eventually you will run into the heavenly Pink Cherry blossoms to your left (Plaine de la Pépinére).

Every year the gardens at Sceaux celebrate the Hanami "Cherry Clossom Viewing", a Japanese custom of picnicking under the trees with family and friends. It is a great excuse for gathering up a circle of friends, choosing your favorite things to eat and drink, and then plan on a good nap afterwards. Don't forget to take you camera!

Partager Paris and More ... MADRID

El Prado Madrid

Another really nice thing about living in Paris, ... is that you can go to so many other European cities easily and cheaply. I was reading Bonjour Paris's article the other day about her trip to Berlin; and thanks to her great article I had a much better time in Madrid! Thank you, Bonjour Paris! How is that you wonder? I took her advice and left in the afternoon, instead of the early morning, arriving in Madrid just in time for a drink before dinner. Madrid is, like Berlin, about 2 hours away. Flights are numerous, so usually there is a flight available every couple of hours, departing from Orly Airport. Once we landed, we took a taxi to the hotel, a bit expensive as the airport is out from the city. There is a bus/metro available, but .... We stayed at one of the larger business hotels, which was nice for wifi, happy hours, and right next to a metro stop. The city's transportation system is excellent, cheap, safe, and runs late (around 1am). I bought a 10- ride pass that was less than 10 E, and used it on buses and metros alike. The city is a great one for exploring on foot, too, especially when the weather is nice. I had lots of items on my list to visit, a special guide book with 12 different tours ... much more than I could do in 3 days, so I decided to choose one big event per day, and the rest of my time would be "par hasard". The pressure was off!

There are several museums in Madrid which should be visited, the Prado and the Reine Sofia, are two not to be missed. They are housed close together with the Royal Botanical Gardens (El Real Jardin Botánico) sitting between them. What a lovely place to go and loose yourself! There are special discount days and times, so take a look on the internet before you leave.

The shopping is great, (especially the Rastro on Sunday mornings), the architecture is stately, the people are warm, the city is colorful, the restaurants stay open almost all the night ... and the white wines are just divine! It is only 2 hours from Paris .....

An entertaining venture down the canal in your own boat, movies, bars, restaurants ... you can finish your stroll at the large restaurant La Criée where you are sure to find a table waterside and a refreshing verre á vin blanc to watch the world go by ...

It is a real special moment when you are invited to your neighbors for the first time. We have lived in our building for nearly 7 years now, and this was the first time any of our at least 15 neighbors had extended an invitation, an "aperitif dinatoire" was what she had said. I was nervous. What was this "aperitif dinatoire"? a few drinks, lasting a few hours at the most? It turned out to be a really delightful evening ... ALL evening, with our hostess bringing out trays of food every so often paired with a different wine each time. We ate, drank and talked about everything ... although who cares that I only understood 60 - 70% of what was said.

So now its our turn! An apero dinner is a brilliant idea; a dinner prepared in advance that needs no real further attention once your guests arrive; composed of many small tastes, cold and hot ... A "laid - back" evening is what it is all about. But, as an American from the south, where there is no such thing as too much food ... I have a tendency to overdo a bit ... so, once again I did. Wanting the evening to be as delightful as the evening we had spent with them .. I spent the week picking out recipes from every site on the web ... searching for the perfect combination of "services" for the "aperitif dinatoir" ... I finally settled on the 4 services - Le froid, le chaud, le plat principal, le dessert, and thé/café. It all looked so simple to prepare, the recipes were easily understood. Certainly I would be done in no time! The "no time" turned into all day ... But who cares when you are the eternal student of french cooking and entertaining!

So, if you are planning an evening with friends any time soon, you might want to do a la francaise with an aperitif dinatoire. Take a look HERE for the perfect combination of recipes.

Au Pays du Sourire Restaurant 5e Paris

On every corner is a Chinese Restaurant in Paris ... but this one is special. This one is one of the last of the original Peking restaurants left in Paris. We had been planning for several weeks to visit this restaurant. I had passed it a few times, trying to look in the windows, as I was on my way to French class. I was always a bit too early to see what kind of crowd it drew. The date was set and sadly, at the last minute, Mr. T had to cancel, but I went ahead and met my dates there. I arrived before the rest, but decided to go on in and get the feel of the place. I was met with a large sourire, as promised by its name. "Avez vous un reservation?" Its always a good way to start a relationship with a restaurant in Paris that you might want to revisit ... IOWs Make a reservation if possible. I replied "oui" and I was seated in a very good spot. The menu was extensive, so I was well entertained while I waited for my friends to join me. They were also warmly greeted by the owner, with much talk about this and that while menus were placed in everyone's hands, and apero orders were taken. Apparently, Sunday and Thursday nights are the nights to visit as the chef, Mme Qi, makes a speciality Pékinoises ravioles, special dumplings stuffed with meat and vegetables that are loved by all in the neighborhood. I would suggest you get there early and be sure to make a reservation!

What a lovely name I said to myself as I walked by ...Villa Adriana ... admiring the terra cotta sculpture in the display window ... léchez la vitrine, a favorite pastime of mine.

So many times I have walked in front of this "vitrine" telling myself that the next time I really should stop and shop ... well the next time was today. Its a small shop, just the right amount of space to be able to see everything .. I would call it a very cosy space with pictures traveling up the walls, vintage umbrellas, italian glass vases of various shapes and colors, art deco mirrors (wish it were mine ...), table lamps and ceiling lamps from romantic eras, and my favorite ... vintage jewelry! A large collection of Nina Ricci earrings, Chanel style necklaces, brooches, and a plethora of 19th century "objects de charme" that all have a history that I could feel while I was exchanging short stories with the welcoming proprietaire of this very lovely antiques store dans mon coin.
Villa Adriana has been providing the quartier with antiques and broncante finds for 17 years. The owner has a real passion for finding special pieces from all over Paris. So for those visitors to Paris who don't have the time to visit the Grande Puces of Paris, you can find that special objet de charme right here, next to the Eiffel Tower.

"Let's eat Indian tonight?"
If that sounds good to you, too, try heading over to the Passage Brady in the 10eme this weekend. Especially if the weather is a bit rainy or cool. Not only does it have some very good Indian and Pakistan restaurants, but there are also some very interesting grocery stores there.
If its time to fill up on curry, tumeric, coriander (great in coffee if you want that exotic gout first thing in the morning ... I know I do), or maybe you are needing some essential oils, like patchouli, sandlewood, lavendar, (nice to mix in a spritzer bottle and spray around the house or on your ironing, if you actually still iron) ... or a nice orange to make you sleep better .... if not any of that, certainly you will need some curry sauce (I love Patak"s) and Naan bread for that homemade Indian meal if you can't make it out to your favorite Indian restaurant near the Gare de Nord.
But, if none of this is on your list, I'm sure you will find something at Velan's, a great way to while away some time and find that perfect exotic trinket you've been looking for. Take some time to pick out some fruit and vegetables in the "passage" in front of the store. The prices are certainly "interesting"!

If you have an extra few minutes or maybe still a bit hungry, stroll around the area, rue L'Echiquier de Metz. There are many traitors and restaurants that might have that perfect Turkish patisserie for an afternoon tea.

Still haven't found that perfect pair of shoes yet? The Paris SOLDES are nearly over, so now is the time to get serious. With most stores displaying 50% off, you will be able to afford two pairs! I have never seen so many shoes crying out for a home!

Don't wait too long, the sales will be over the 15th.

But, just in case you missed them this time, don't fret, Paris has SOLDES (sales) two times per year. The summer sales will begin the end of June (check here for exact dates and maybe a good airfare) and last for 6 weeks. I do encourage you to arrange your trip to arrive the first week or so of the SOLDES if you want the best choice of merchandise and sizes. Attention all Photographers and Lovers of Fire!
As Mr. T and I both love to take photos, we were invited by the PhotoMeetup of Paris to the Palais de Tokyo for a challenging evening of photo opps at the 7th annual "Fire Eaters Birthday Party". This birthday celebration occurs every year at the end of January in the waterless fountains of the Palais. This is a very large party that gathers around the Arts of poī, .. with lots of fire eaters, jugglers, interesting people from all over, music, and a certain type of tribal magic. This is THE place known all across Europe to go in order to meet the fire scene of France. The French Burn Crew has a 6 year successful history of making this a welcoming event.

The "Fire Eaters" festivities usually occur every Saturday night, beginning around 9pm and ending with the last metro ride of the evening, usually around 2am. Every now and then, nobody will show up, so check the forum before you arrange an evening around this event.
Word of Caution - although it is mainly attended by good fire people, you are still on the streets of Paris, so take care of your belongings.

Delicious at Le Village

Fridays are my days to explore ...

Last Friday I decided to wander over to the latest BoBo district, (easier than saying bourgeois bohemian each time), the 10e at the historical doors of Paris, from Faubourg Saint Denis to the rue Paradis, a small little village that has become the latest hot spot for fashion, hip restaurants and bars, quaint street markets, and exotic grocery stores. I went to visit my friend, J, who has started working at one of the hip little epiceries called Le Village. As I walked thru the door, the bright colors and delicious smells welcomed me, while the New York cheesecake made me think I was in NYC, and the pastas of Jamie Oliver reminded me I could be in London; while all the rest confirmed that I was in France. The shelves elegantly displayed many types of olive oils, vinegars, sauces, coarse salts, wines, jams, english cakes, teas, coffees from around the world .. while the glass display counters were tempting me with their pastries, chocolate bars, soups, cookies ...

did I mention they also have a plat du jour?

Tell Joanna I sent you and she will make sure you find what you want, and enjoy a nice cup of tea!

Good reason to Eat Cake

Celebrate the season and eat this frangipane-filled, delicious cake!

They are tempting me at every corner. They come in so many delicious flavors, even chocolate.
" Try me " they are begging…you won't be sorry , … plus it is a truly valid reason to get together with friends, old and new, and share this tradition, accompanied by a nice bubbly. And there is the additional plus of entertainment, Who will be the King, or Queen ?!

Such excitement to chew each bite carefully ... , until someone cries out triumphantly …"I win, I win!!"
At last year's traditional party, we had three beautiful young women visiting from Sweden, who ALL became Queens for the evening. (How did that happen?) The men were really enjoying playing the roles of the minions to these new Queens!

In France the tradition of serving the Couronnes en Fête (in the south of France) or Galette du Rois (in the north of France) can be traced back to the 14th century. A small bean, coin or porcelain fève is baked inside the cake and whoever receives the little favor is then crowned king or queen for the day. Tradition also dictates that the cake be cut into as many slices as there are people present, plus one extra. The extra piece is called either la part du Bon Dieu (God's piece), la part de la Vierge (the Virgin Mary's piece) or la part du pauvre (poor man's piece) and it is given to the first poor person who stops at the home.

Who will become king or queen for the day at your house? Make sure you have the crown ready for the new member of royalty!

The galette is typically served on January 6, which is Epiphany, or the Feast of the Kings.

Notre- Dame of Semur-en-Auxois, for the children lost in the war

Mr. T promised that if I let him rest on Sunday, we could "run all around" on Saturday, so of course, I took him up on it. I had done my homework about the area, and felt that my biggest opportunity for satisfying my curious needs to "search high and low" and "look around every corner" was in Semur-en-Auxois, just a short drive from our gite in Tivauche. True enough, the city wasn't far, the weather was perfect and the light was great for photos. Our first sight of the city forced "AWE", a city that dates back to the 12th century deserves an AWE! Our first stop was Notre-Dame of Semu-En-Auxois considered a remarkable example of Gothic art, construction began in the 13th century. Our fingers were hot on the shutter button, and after taking every angle of the church, the gardens, the city, the bridge to the city....etc. we called it a day ... what another great day in Bourgogne.
Planning some time in Bourgogne? Highly recommended!

I, on the other hand, am heading back across the pond for a while, to a place where internet is still a foreign word...posts will be sporadic, but I will check in from time to time.

"Miam ... Miam, Quick get him on the phone! " I said after the first smell ... le nez ... was interesting, complex, yet simple,and le gout had hints of blackberries, honey, smokey ... in other words, it was delicious - a 2006 Irancy. I was not familiar with Irancy, never had I seen it at my local wine shop. "He will be happy to see you anytime over the weekend, just give a call before you arrive." How simple, how nice, how I was looking forward to our trip to Irancy the next day. The ride was a bit longer than I had thought, and the roads were a bit narrower than was comfortable at times ... tractors tend to own these roads, as they should ...

"You have arrived at your destination", Mme. Navigator informed us. We stared down over this beautiful valley, sunset just beginning, and marveled at the view in front of us.

Tivauche

We managed to steal away for a few days, Mr. T and me. Being an avid real estate and holiday homes in France websurfer, I ran across an absolutely fantastic place on the Emerald coast; every window looked out onto the Atlantic. A couple more steps before I could call it ours for the "pont weekend" ... check the weather and hours in the car. Short weekend deserves a short drive. After checking France meteo and the hours in the car, the verdict was clear .... don't go there, save it for another time, I told myself sadly .... So, the search was on again, and I found an even better place; a place to appreciate the stunning colors of fall. The time for the leaves to unite and really show off, ... what better leaves to admire, but the leaves of the vines of my favorite wines! Head to Bourgogne, the Cote d'Or! Searching a bit more, I found a place in the northern part, a bit south of Auxerre, a little east of Avallon. Checking our criteria for renting a place: fireplace, view, bathtub, .... this place filled them all! Jackpot! Now we had never really stayed in a "hamlet", and were a bit concerned about the "character" of the inhabitants, the acceptable activities, and what to do with nothing to do ... we thought. But now was our chance, the hamlet of Tivauche.
With the excitement of getting away, I forgot that it was a "fete" in France, thus all would be closed ... so our smiles turned upside down as we drove along seeing everything closed up tight ... no baguette, no petit supermarche, no wine, no nothing ... so, with a determination to make it thru the evening on 2 apples and a half bottle of wine, few chips and half a sandwich I didn't eat at lunch, we arrived at Tivauche. The owners, Bill and Jenny, welcomed us, let us in ... and sheepishly we asked about any stores open nearby .... ? With a wide smile and shining eyes, they said follow us... In 10 minutes we were loaded down with homemade bread, pasta, ratatouille, cereal, goat's milk, and TWO bottles of wine from Irancy (which leads to another story...) A warmer welcome I have never had before ....

"Ma Vue"

This is a familiar view for me ... and I will miss it while I am gone. Luckily , Mr. T can keep a watch for me, just to make sure all is OK across the way. It is interesting how in days gone by, this closeness would have really annoyed me, this "vis-a-vis" as it is called, would have been enough to force me to complain loudly that "I have no privacy!" but, for some reason, here, in this place, I just don't mind. I appreciate it, and I wait to see someone move about over there. I feel as though I am a small part of something bigger, and I am secure in that feeling.
Its a lovely vue. One I will miss, but not forever...

and, of course, the vues to come will be welcome, too!

Ornamental Cabbage

The cooler days have changed the looks of the les fleurs at the florists on rue Cler. We have the cyclamens, decorative cabbages, the end of the hortensias, the red berries, and a lot of brightly colored foliage to add to your bouquets.

The weekend has also rolled around once again, so keep these flowers in mind if you have been lucky enough to have received a dinner invitation for the weekend. As invited guests, or les invites, the french are accustomed to arriving with a bon cadeau of chocolates or flowers. I really like this tradition, don't you?

Champ de Mars

Its happened. Overnight. The leaves have tombé sur la terre. This is always such a beautiful time in Paris. The walks by the Seine take on another dimension. The Jardin de Luxembourg becomes a monastery, a place of worship, everyone overcome with the colors that nature has painted on this season's canvas.

As leaves swirl down to find connection with where they arose, we, too, unknowingly are performing the same ritual.

This morning, I opened a magazine that I had stowed away for future reference of some sort, and out slipped a red leaf from last fall. Still perfect, still with its beautiful rich colors. What a nice reminder of the past year's fall adventures.

Go find your perfect fall leaf and tuck it away .... it will reward you someday.

Afternoon Delights

I seemed to run into him everywhere I went... and each time we talked about getting together and sharing photographs of our latest voyages, about his research of the Seychelles Islands, about his wife and all the grandchildren ... on and on .... and of course, it never happens. I'm sure you know what I mean. It seems to happen a lot in Paris. The reason for this is simple. In Paris, you frequently meet new people, new and exciting people who you share common interests, or they are new in town and maybe a bit lonely ... or you just want to get to know them better, and so the discussion leads to the "let's get together sometime soon" conversation. These future plans are discussed with great excitement, can't wait to get together, when? where? How? and then ... never happens. This time, when I ran into him, I was determined to send him an invitation by text, telephone, or Parisian pigeon. And I did. And he accepted.

What a nice afternoon, sipping tea, and enjoying afternoon tasty delights! Hearing, in full, all of the things we had said we would discuss and much more ...

I am so glad I was determined. I really should be that way more often!

My Corner ...

I spent the whole day on Wednesday looking at apartments. I felt completely upside down as to where I and if I should really be spending my time like this. Of all the apartments I visited, there was nothing I could imagine myself living in ... not for even a week as a holiday home. Paris is like any other big city when it comes to finding your special spot you can call home. It doesn't come easy, and most of the time, it is your connections who lets you know when there is something interesting.
When we first arrived in Paris, I had no idea the despondency I would feel before the "magic" place was found. The weeks living in an apartment wasn't so bad ... my friends would make this plain to me when I would complain about having no place to live.. "oh, the poor thing, she HAS to stay in a quaint little hotel in Paris ..."
But, the chase is on ... trying to find that perfect place, but for the moment,
There is no place like home!

Partager Picnics in Paris

Picnic at Jeu de Paume vu par PP

Picnics are a way of life here in Paris. Especially if you are not used to the hours of eating in restaurants, which btw, is from noon to about 2:30. After that you need to find a brasserie or café to quiet those hunger pangs ... so, picnics are one of the best ways to get thru the day. Picnics in Paris can take place just about anywhere you like. Choose a nice paté, some cheeses and fruit, few slices of ham and sausages, baguette and a nice pastry to end with ... oh, and don't forget a sampling of wine. Here we have a couple who has found the perfect spot for that quick picnic as they wait for the Jeu de Paume to open.

Today, the weather has turned that lovely, romantic gray that Paris is famous for .. so, we headed to the Jeu de Paume to visit the latest retrospective and meet some of Mr. T's "imaginary friends" from Canada that he corresponds with regularly in internet photo contests, etc... So, of course, the photo exhibtion was very apropos for our meeting; and the "imaginary" friends took on a real reality before long. So glad Mr. T makes friends so easily!

The exhibition was a collection of André Kertész photos sharing his beginnings in Hungary, time spent in Paris (his favorite time of his life) and his many years in NYC (1894-1985); an Hungarian photographer who became one of the leading figures of avant-garde photography in Paris. A fantastic collection which left me with words to live by...

Waiting for baguettes

It happens several times a day, but Sunday mornings are the worse ... In-line waiting for your baguette! It is a phenomena here; it happens in every neighborhood. Baguettes, breads of all kinds, pastries are eaten all day long and by everyone. This happens to be the boulangerie right in front of my apartment, so I have this "cinema" to watch throughout the day. Another interesting phenomena here in Paris, is that you are loyal to your boulangerie. If you do happen to "stray" .... you make sure "they" do not see you carrying in someone else's bread!

Yesterday I "strayed" to a NEW boulangerie. One of my friends and her husband (and their little boy) have opened their own boulangerie. It is exciting to me to visit "behind the scenes" of their shop in the 15th arrondisement, rue Vaurigard (btw, the longest street in Paris). It is charming, old shop they have really turned into something special. With its marble counters and large display windows (which she changes every 15 days, she has told me) and colorful terra cotta floor ... I feel as though I have stepped way back in time. The smells wafting thru the shop ... as I am saying "I will take one of those, and one of those ... and don't forget one of those café eclairs!"

Le Bon Coin Gallery Rue Montcalm

The day was gorgeous and screamed for a trip around town. I had received an invitation to a vernissage in the 18e from a good friend in our Paris PhotoMeetup Group. Did I tell you about that? Always a good way to find your way around in a new city ... for those who like to travel with your camera, just google up Photo Meetup - city - and there you have it. We have an exceptionally good group that more or less live in Paris, so there are familiar faces each time there is a meet-up .. (take a look). Please join us sometime.

The exhibition was housed in a gallery in the 18e, right in front of the Bon Coin Café on rue Montcalm. Already the place sounded alluring ... , any connection to calm is attractive to me lately ... and since the 18e arrondisement has captured my interests recently, I have made it my new favorite arrondisement to explore. So, off I head to find my photo buddies ... The gallery has been acquired thru an organization called PAN, Paris Alumnae/i Network. PAN has been in existence since 1994, so not really new, but I had never heard of them before. It welcomes Anglophones from all walks and parts of the world, and life, something that sounds very interesting to me .. along with the very affordable dues that go along with these types of Parisian get-togethers. Their activities range from career development, social, educational, and cultural events .. many that have caught my eye as I took a glance at their website. Thanks, my friends, for telling me about this new way to enjoy another part of Paris.

But back to the Bon Coin ("A's"') photography exhibition ... we are always proud when one of OURS (photo group) is on display around town. It is a special moment, as photographers tend to relate to their pictures in emotional ways .... and when one is successful, as "A" has been, we all feel that warm, fuzzy feeling, too. A success was felt by all!

So another part of Paris discovered, along with a new group, PAN, to visit ...

Partager Les Fetes des Vendanges at Montmarte

The fall is here and that means the grapes are ready for picking, which also means it is time for Les Fetes des Vendanges at Montmarte. If you have not participated in this annual event, you really need to go! After all my years of living in Paris, last year was my first time for going to this largely celebrated affair, and now, I am sorry that I have missed many years of fun and celebration. So, don't miss out! The parade is the highlight of the fete, so check out the times on the website.

All regions of France are represented ..., so lots of entertainment, food demonstrations, wine flows freely, along with other delicious tastes and smells of the season. Starting today and thru the weekend, plan your time to include this fete des fetes!

On Saturday night, Oct. 9, in front of Sacré-Coeur, there will be Grand Feu d'Artifice en musique, some fantastic fireworks and music, by Jacques Couturier Organisation.

Love Fondue!

While we were visiting our bons amis in Geneva, they were kind enough to take us to one of the most "famous" restaurant to eat the VERY BEST fondue in Switzerland. The famous restaurant, Café-restaurant des Ramparts in Gruyères is known for its moitiè-moitiè, which is a creamy fondue made of gruyère cheese and fribourgeois cheese, bit of nutmeg, and of course, some Swiss white wine. The recipe works well if you use REAL Swiss cheeses and wines. Alors, you need to start planning your trip now for the proper fondue. Winter is on its way!

While you are in the trés belle ville of Gruyères, take some time to visit the museum and bar of the famous surrealist sculptor/artist who made the film Alien famous, H. R Giger. His bar is quite unique and really not so scary once you've had a glass of wine or two!

We have just returned from a "Not for Vegetarians" weekend with some of our bestest buds from Paris, S and JP, who have recently demanager á Geneve. That is one of the good/bad parts of living in Paris ... which is ... (this is the good part) ... you meet lots of nice people, become close .... and (this is the bad part) ... they often move away. BUT, (this is the other part of the good part), they invite you to visit them wherever their new home may be.

So, we are invited to Geneva ...

Walking around the quartier, as often I do, this shop, Carnar caught my eye. First of all, I thought it was an Argentinian restaurant, which it wasn't ... but it was the next best thing. A Take-Out Argentinian store, a Vente au Public! As JP is in love with a good steak, I decided to venture in to see what it was all about....especially since the weekend for our Geneva BBQ was approaching, and I knew how JP would really be happy to see us with this cadeau in our luggage. The vendeures were very kind and helpful, showing all the cuts of beef, best ones for the bar-be, and suggested wines for each cut of beef. Also they have many side dishes and some desserts you can also add to your order. It takes a few days, so plan ahead, but it is soooo worth it (if you are not a vegetarian), especially if you know someone who really enjoys some delicious Argentinian beef. Right JP?

Our weekend in Geneva was a great success, with an open invitation ... I guess as long as we bring the goods from Carnar we will be visiting Geneva again soon!!

Tomorrow will be a challenging day. Another manifestation against the changes that are trying to take place in the social system of France. So, this is how it will probably look from my window tomorrow. there will be many disruptions of trains, RER, bus and metro ...plus I think the teachers are participating, so the children will lose a day of school. I guess , being American, the changes seem quite minimal - 60 years of age to 62, when in the good ole

US of A, it is more like 65 years old ... and we will be lucky if there are any monies left when we reach this ripe old age. So, what to do?

Enjoy the music and hope that it doesn't last for too many days....

You have to give the french credit for not letting anyone go hungry along the way!

Words of advice... When you are traveling to France in September...take care.

Old Riga

The past week flew by .. way too fast when you are having a good time in Riga, Latvia.
This picture represents a real quiet part of the day in Riga. It doesn't look like this all day and never at night ... the nights are quite different. People from everywhere are enjoying the last remaining clear nights of the summer season. Restaurants are everywhere, bike taxis to pedal you home after hours enjoying the music that could be found at the many beer gardens ... that ran into the next beer garden and into the next beer garden ... and I'm sure you get it..., interesting small shops selling their famous amber from the sea, craft markets selling their handmade linens, woolens, and carved leather books, and flower vendors on every corner brightening up your day. Plus, the largest fresh market in Europe, selling the biggest mushrooms I have ever seen. Walking thru this market was like taking a walk in the forest ..the smell of these mushrooms hit you, forcing you to find the nearest restaurant with mushroom soup on its outdoor menu. Fortunately, that was not a problem in this easy to get around town. Transportation by bus and tram was easy to figure out and jump on. Just look out for the controllers on the right bank!

Yes, Riga, is a very agreeable city, a very lively place to spend your weekend. I had been anxiously waiting for an invitation from Mr. T to visit the "Paris of the North" for quite some time. The last time he went, poor guy, was in February, meters of snow minimized his explorations, but even with this hardship he managed to take some great pictures and have some stories to share... Enough to catch my interest and hope that I, too, would be flying Baltic Air to this lovely city, decorated in art nouveau architecture, near the Baltic Sea.

There are some tips I will pass on to you, so you will have an even better time in Riga ...

Partager The End of the Summer Fruits

Miam .. Miam...

The rains have returned to Paris today .. a bit triste ..., but there is still a bit of summer fruits to enjoy before the season is over. So Waste no time gathering up those last tastes of Summer ... those luscious peaches, plump blackberries, sensuous mangos, and sweet mirabelles at your favorite marché.

This is a lunch that my friend, J, served me the other day. I felt like I had just devoured an injection of health, magic, and even some extra "smarts." I proceeded to my new french professor's house, and wowed her with my progress, well nearly..... I did feel a certain amount of confidence after eating this delicious repas of summer fruits. This confidence cannot come soon enough, as we are interviewing for our 10-year residency card in a few short weeks. I realize that my french should (and I am most of the time understood correctly) be somewhat acceptable by now... but losing this southern accent is difficult! So, back to school I go for another round!

Anyone have their 10-year card that could give me some tips?

La Rentree is the signal for everyone to clean out their closets, and put it on the streets along side the professional sellers during the city's grand braderies (discount sales), vide-greniers and brocantes. There are several large brocantes and vide-greniers (empty the attic) scheduled for this month. The largest is in LIlle, La Grande Braderie de LIlle, the 4 and 5 of September, located a bit north of Paris. This is one of the biggest puces in Europe, covering hundreds of kilometers. Everyone comes to have a good time and eat moules-frites (mussels and french fires). But, if you don't have the time to travel to Lille, or you don't like moules-frites, try next weekend's brocante, 11 and 12 Sept., at St. Sulpice in the 6e; and La Bourse the weekend of the 18 and 19, September in the 2e. You are bound to find that special something for yourself!

I will be looking for you there!

Partager Paris Arrondisments - 18e

L'Escalier off rue Caulaincourt

Another of my little hobbies that fills my days is chasing after brocantes and vide-greniers (empty the attic, since the garages are few and far between here). This is not a new thing for me, as I managed to make the rounds in my old home town of Jacksonville Beach.
Paris and around ... has a plethora of them. The difficulty is chosing which one to visit on your "empty" weekend day. The website http://www.info-brocantes.com/ helps me figure out this difficult task. Sometimes I even talk Mr. T in coming along...
One of the best parts of the puces tour, besides finding that really special something that absolutely no one else has ... is discovering a new part of Paris. Last weekend, I chose the 18e, getting off the bus at rue Caulaincourt and heading down the "rabbit holes" that are frequent in this quartier. Wandering around this area affectionately called the "Balcony of Paris", it is a half-dream, half-nightmare of an area; exploring the seedy joints and Christian sites sitting side by side.

Its time to get familiar with the area since the Vendange - the local annual wine-harvest parade and party will be the first of October. Take a look at what's to come!:

When I have trouble sleeping, and sometimes there are those nights that I am too excited about the next day to fall asleep...I use the simple technique of planning a menu from all the lovely fresh produce at the fresh markets of Paris. I have decided to visit each market and find their specialities. Want to come along?

This past week I visited the Marché Maubert in the 5th. An easy bus ride and I am there .... trying to decide which end to start. There are around 20 - 25 stalls; a bit hard to tell since these are still the summer sellers, the abonners (regular booth sellers) are still on vacation. This is France you know....so, at the market today was an abundance of bijoux sellers, from China, South America, southern France, Paris, (they even take credit cards!) ..... also, your usual seasonal fruits and vegetables, my favorite stall - la Miel, not only honey in its pure form, but also soaps, cakes, candy drop, which are one of my trusted purse items, clothes,including hats, panama and winter berets and caps, blankets (some of the best prices I have seen so far), delicious products from the Southwest of France, home to foie gras, cassoulet, easy to heat meals (cog au vin, cuisse de canard ... can't wait to try those) and all types of delicious chopped meats and patés, and did I mention wines from Bergerac?

The market was over before I was ready, but there is always next week!

Snail on its way to Chantilly

I've been hearing a lot about snails lately ... and this was after I found this little guy on the fence on his way to the Chateau of Chantilly. Apparently there is talk of the Fionacci numbers and how it relates to the basic DNA structure that we all share ... way too complicated for this read, but AS Byatt (one of my favorite authors) shares my interst in neurosciences, and she happen to speak of it, too... so where this is going I'm not sure... but I had taken a picture of a snail the preceding day, and I can only ask myself WHY?

But, it had to have had something to do with the beauty of nature that we encountered on our way back from Senlis. We had rounded a corner and then IT was en face! What a nice way to end our day-tripping! The Chateau of Chantilly! If you are coming to Paris anytime soon, and have a day to spare, try to fit this in. Cathédrale Notre-Dame Senlis

Mr. T and I are spending our last few days of his vacances taking day trips here and there, looking for a possible place to live someday ... Our daytrips have been chosen with the help of my great new favorite book by Annabel Simms, One Hour From Paris. The book is just the thing to motivate you out to the outer edges of the RERs lines (regional trains of Paris), and then even further on to the footpaths that were used years ago. The book is organized into city/chapters which give you a nice historical summary, suggested visit and lots of useful FYIs at the end of each chapter ... such as best time to go, (based on fresh markets days, museum hours, etc), getting there (train, car, taxi, etc) museums/attractions, and restaurants .. enough information to lure you there and keep you occupied until the last train leaves! We chose the city of Senlis, which is located at the convergence of several major forests, boasts exceptional architectural and cultural heritage. Its 40 ha is a preserved area well-loved by film-directors. The day flew by exploring the riches of the city that Ms. Simms had described so well.

Maybe we could live here someday?

The summer is nearly over ... la rentrée is nearly here, so if you have stayed in Paris in August and have not visited the Paris Plage yet, go have some fun this weekend before its too late! The second part of Paris Plage is near the Bassin de la Villette.
The Paris Photo Meetup met there last weekend, and had quite the time! Unfortunately we had a bit of a ruction with one particular young security officer who had a problem with us taking photos at one end of the plage, but security at the other end were quite friendly about us being there snapping away. Always a good time with the photo meetup. So, if you are in Paris and want some good shooting with some great photographers, look us up and join in.

Maybe I will get up the courage to join in with the dancers this weekend!

Partager "Sun Dog" Night

Taking a walk around Paris usually turns into a "happening" of some sort. The other night, Mr. T was involved in a major photo contest, so we headed out to see what we could see. Any direction will take you there. Our first stop was the Passerelle Léopold-Sédar-Senghor, because there are such lovely views from this bridge at sunset, plus there are usually some interesting people gathered together, playing music, dancing or picnicing. We had gotten off the bus and taken two steps onto the bridge when I looked up ... and "WOW ... what is that?" If you look closely at my photo (of course, Mr. T's was much better, but mine will have to do unless you look at his Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/collardgreens/4859393840/ ) you will see "3 Suns" AKA, Sun Dog. or a mock sun. Such a photo opp!! We both yanked out our cameras, laughing at the coincidence of this miraculous siting. But, I think Shakespeare said it best, "Dazzle mine eyes, or do I see three suns?"

So, next time you are in Paris, maybe take a walk over this pedestrian bridge and hope for a "3 Sun Dog Night" !

A day on the river! A great way to see the city of Paris! Over the weekend, Mr. T and I went for our usual Sunday afternoon walk across the pedestrian bridge near the Musee Quai Branly. And as usual for this time of year, the Bateaux Mouches were making their cruises up and down the river, putting smiles on lots of faces. Everyone is friendly on boats and buses. Your next new friend could be just a wave away! Yes, In Paris, sometimes a smile, a quick wink, or just a turn of your head could be the opening to an interesting afternoon in our lovely city.

Even if Paris is your home, the Bateaux Mouche is a great way to spend the day, and get new perspectives of Paris.

Partager Parc Bagatelle

The weekend has arrived once again .. right on time. The city has cleared out nicely, and it is the month of sharing this beautiful city with les etrangers that keep this city bustling and beautiful. I do love the month of August in Paris, although an old friend told me ... "in the old days you would not be seen in Paris in August; you would be too embarrassed to be in the city instead of your country home in the provinces. If you did not have a country home, so sorry for you, then you would just pull your blinds down and stay hidden!" Well, I am glad its not like that today, but it is nice to enjoy the calmness of the city, the long nights that are perfect for walks along the river, the light just right for the perfect romantic photographs near the Square du Vert Galant, and the lights of the city gleaming in your eyes ...Paris, Paris, Paris!

Here is a nice place to visit during these long days .. the lovely restaurant at Parc de Bagatelle.
We spent the afternoon there, and what a delight. The food was delicious, starting with the plate principal of fresh bass on a cooked just right tomato risotto, followed with fresh strawberries and cream for Mr. T, and for me ...my favorite, the macaroon with caramel ice cream; just a hint of sea salt. Delicious and so refreshing. The walk in the park afterwards to take photos of the brightly colored summer wild flowers was a perfect day to Partager!

Partager Boutons (Buttons)!!

Button, Button, Who has the Button?! Originating from the French work bouton, I'm sure many of us have played that game. What I wasn't sure about is that the Bouton is so old and so popular. I can remember spending hours with my mother's button box, never eating a one ... and those pretty buttons could keep me entertained for hours ... just as they can today. There are some great places to buy buttons here in Paris; The Marché St. Pierre, at the Puce, and I have found one or two just laying on the sidewalk. But the place to enjoy buttons in Paris is the exhibition, Boutons, phénomène artistique, historique et culturel at the Foundation Mona Bismarck. As you walk in the door to this beautiful hotel particular, with its romantic, winding staircase and white- black tiled floor, you are met by a very nice gentleman who hands you a looking glass, for your viewing pleasure, and gently ushers you into the darkened room lit by a fairly mammoth lustre, walled in mirrors. Buttons surround you, about 1,500 buttons of the most rarest and beautiful buttons, telling you their story ... which begins like this ....

We have always needed ways to keep ourselves open and closed to the public, so to speak.
They have always been an essential item, but buttons have been used all the way back to prehistoric times in Egypt, Iran, and Greece. The earliest in the exhibition include Chinese buttons in agate from the Han tombs dating back to the Dian kingdom (206 -220 AD). Buttons hang around a long time! The golden age of the button was in 18th century France; exquisite miniature works of art. (seen very well with your looking glass). At the time of the French Revolution, there were over 1,000 button workers. "Libertines" wore buttons with erotic drawings concealed behind their lapels or inside their collars. Imagine! By the 19th century, button making becoming more industrialized and reflected the main artistic movements of the day - Art Nouveau and Art Deco. During the heydays of the haute couture, the demand for unique, one-off buttons was huge.

I still have a fascination for buttons today, and enjoying this exhibition at the home of the former American socialite, the Mona Bismarck Foundation on the Avenue New York, right across from the Eiffel Tower was the perfect way to spend the day in Paris!

Partager Routes D'Arabia at the Louvre

The first day or so after a trip back over the BIG pond, I tend to be a bit lazy. But my mentor and friend, J, wouldn't allow that ... and I am grateful for her energy and determination to enlighten and broaden herself, and include me on her path.

So, the message was delivered by Mr. T, time and place, and off I went to meet some of J's friends and have a picnic in the beautiful Tuillieries Gardens, a convenient place for our next venture at the Louvre. But first the picnic! J, as usual, had cooked up some delicious lentil paté, mushroom paté and an Italian- twist to some delicious roasted vegetabels (secret ingredient was the capers!). The day was more than perfect for a picnic under the chestnut trees ... the shade was just enough to shelter us from la chaleur that has lived in Paris now for the past few weeks. Two hours, the required lunch time for les françaises, passed quickly as we listened to stories, gossiped a little, and relished each bite of the picnic. So, now off to our hours of enlightenment at the Louvre. J is l'amie du Louvre, which means she has a annual pass with perks (... a really good idea that I am going to purchase for myself this year), and in we go thru a "secret passage" for Friends of the Lourvre to see the Routes D'Arabia. The ancient past of Saudi Arabia is being shown for the first time ever, as it is the first time it has ever left its country. The show was conceived after the 2004 agreement between the Louvre and the Saudi commission for tourism. It contains around 320 pieces, which the majority pre-date the the birth of Islam in the 7th century. It will be shown until September 27, 2010.

Partager Paris in the Summertime

BACK in PARIS for the summertime! Tres Chaud, but lots of fun for all!

After 24 hours of traveling, via Canada Air this time, I am back in Paris. The last month was spent with Family and Friends in the beautiful, but some days way too hot, FLORIDA - my home before Paris.

But now I'm back and already hitting the streets for all that Paris has to offer for summer fun, and there is lots of fun for all. I took the obligatory walk thru the neighborhood .. starting with the all the beautiful brides gathered in front of the Tour Eiffel for their pictures with their families, sharing the Champ de Mars with all the energetic children enjoying the beautiful warm day, up and down the rue St. Dominique, excited to see that the SOLDES are still going on (!), smelling my favorite Moisson Bread at the boulangerie on rue Grenelle, passing by L'Epicerie Fine for their inspiring vitrines to see what I should buy for the next time we entertain and, of course, including a stroll down rue Cler, our famous market street, I felt like I was home again.

OHhh, what a feeling!

Partager Un Verre!

The corner where Mr. T and I sit, usually on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, is a very special corner. You can sit here for as long as you want ... no one tries to shoo you away ... we have chosen our places carefully and they are ours until we are good and ready to go. The bill doesn't come our way until we finally catch the server's eye and wave the universal sign for "l'addition, s'il vous plait."

We have been sitting at this café for over 10 years now. They know us; we know them. It has changed over the years, but so have we .... (just a little). Although it did take us awhile to get used to the new chairs, hours of trying them out helped us to learn to love them, too. The café faces one of the famous buildings in Paris, L'Ecole Militaire, where Napoleon received his military training. The corner map for the quartier lives here too. We have watched "the world" come here to find La Tour Eiffel, only to walk in the wrong direction. Remember when you are using these very helpful neighborhood maps, usually located right next to the metro stops, that they all face north, remember that and then you will easily find La Grande Dame!

Tomorrow I will be leaving for my bi-annual trip to the states, so my posts may be a bit par hasard but I will try to post from sunny Florida when I can. Mr. T will have to visit the café alone (c'est dommage) ... but I'll be back before he knows it! ... So, when you are near the corner café, take a look around for us. We'll partager un verre! And, in the meantime ...

This is my view from my fenetre. Mr. T and I like to sit and stare out of this window. There is always activity, even in the foulest of weather. There are children with their nannies, always dogs and their masters (one woman usually has at least 3 tres mignon terriers), the tourists going to the restaurant next to us, the daily crossings of the habitues to Le Bosquet for their afternoon apero on the terrase, the teenagers of the quartier coming home from school ... and on and on ... Sometimes, we think it is time to move on and get that place in the provinces, but the discussion always ends with .."non, pas encore." It is too good of a vue from ma fenetre.

"I better write it down for you ... its a bit complicated to find the first time. Be sure and come from the direction of rue St. Sulpice, because it is such a short street, you might miss it ... and here are the porte codes. The first porte code is easy to remember XXXX$$; and then you will be in entry to the courtyard. Then once you come thru the entry, you will see a wall sculpture, nice, n'est-ce pas? You will know that you are in my courtyard, and not my neighbors ... then, take the first right and look for the escalier A ... if you go too far, you will be in the next courtyard and it is a private home, but REALLY pretty, so you might want to take a look before you come up. Be sure and notice their rooftop garden. They have lots of big parties there ... French Friends ... I'm so lucky to have such good friends in Paris. They keep my life in a constant state of excitation and surprise. When I first arrived in Paris, I was so excited about the city's gifts and its beauty that I neglected to realize the wonderful friends the city could share with me, too.

Have you missed me? the week off in the French countryside, or France Profond, was one of the best May Madness yet. For the past 3 (or is it 4?) years, mon marie et moi, take a celebration trip...sometimes it is weaved into a bit of work...but this year, it was all on its own!
The French really believe in time off here, and our measly one week was scoffed at, but...we headed to the south for our week in the sun. They were right...minimum of 2 weeks next year!

After spending weeks of internet surfing..looking for the perfect place...I did find a nice one.
Here is the view from our terrace. If anyone wants some information on this find, please let me know....and
I will be happy to Partager this jewel of a mas (large communal farmhouse - complete with its own bread oven shared by all in days of old....) located in a field of thyme and wild honeysuckle...every step of the way, I was surrounded by wonderful smells and vistas...

I love museums. I love going out at night in Paris. It is always beautiful, the lights of the city reflecting over the river and caressing the soft stone of the Haussmanian style buildings ...

Several times during the year, special nights are assigned to be "all-nighters" not in the sense of years ago...but making the night in Paris long and special. On Saturday night, May 15, all over Europe museums were kept open until at least midnight for everyone's viewing pleasure. We started the evening a bit late, but managed to catch up with the crowd in the Marais. Trying to decide between the Musée Carnavalet and the Maison de la Chasse and de la Nature , we decided on the Musée Carnavalet because it had a photography exhibition.
As we are addicted to these, we set off...as usual the musée was filled with people, but with all the rooms and exhibitions to visit and ahhhh over, we had no problems entertaining ourselves until the magic hour of the magic night was over...

The next "all-nighter" will be the 21 of June for the Fete de la Music.
This is a very special night in Paris, so if you are here, be ready to stay up and enjoy the music all day and all night...celebrating the longest day with music on every corner!

When YSL meets the Maharajas

This absolutely beautiful exhibition was held at the Yves Saint Laurent - Pierre Bergé foundation. My visit last week to the exhibition was time very well spent, and opened me up to the desire to discover all things Indian. I had never visited the YSL foundation; a delicate Haussmanian building in the 16th near the Pont d'Alma, a nice walk from where I live, and I was glad that I finally made the visit. The exhibition was a grand collection of more than 60 models of Royal costumes from the "Deepak and Daksha Hutheesing Collection" (last few decades of the British Raj); showcasing darbar costumes from the 1911-1947. The years where wearing all your jewels was very fashionable and so alluring....

The family who shared their collection has more than 5,000 pieces that they have acquired by four generations of family, beginning of 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. Standing there, staring at these beautifully adorned models wearing achkans, chogas, shervanis, saris, adhas, embellished in gold , silver, silk, brocade, velvet, more than a rainbow of colors...I tried to imagine this era of grandeur, elegance, and luxury...and complete decadence. I was so caught up in the moment, I could easily see myself wearing a heavily golden-threaded sari that wound around me like a pet snake, with many hundreds of bracelets on my arms, rings on every finger, bells on my toes,... and ready to accept a magic carpet ride from my favorite genie .....

The different outfits worn by the models were inspiration for my summer wardrobe..

so, I think I will take a trip over to rue Cail and environs le 10e for some shopping and to pick up some mung dal for dinner. Anyone want to partager the day with me?

The First of May, La Fête du Muguet, is the first of many Jours Fériés n the month of May. So many holidays (2 more to come, the 13 and 24) that the month of May is called the month of Swiss cheese....needless to say, not much gets accomplished, but everyone has a good time!

Lily -of- the- Valley, la Muguet, is sold on all the street corners...and everywhere you turn...as you come up from the metro, as you exit the grocery store..on your way down rue Cler, small little stands scattered all about, all over the city and all over France. It is tradition to give the ones you love a small bouquet of these lilies for good luck and to celebrate the arrival of spring. This is also considered Labor Day in France, a holiday the French got from America, (although America celebrates it in September).

So, if you are visiting Paris this month, be prepared for a few closed stores and museums, and arrange your time on these holidays visiting the beautiful parks of Paris...or take in a classical movie at the Grand Rex Theater.

It was her fur hat that caught my eye, but the shoes really did it....

I started at BHV, just like the young girl (wearing the cool, fur hat) told me...never miss a trip to BHV!...then up the Rue des Archives, turning right onto Rue de la Verriere...which then leads you to Rue du Roi de Sicile...and along the way you have MANY Vintage and Fripperies ( french used stuff), mainly clothes and accessories. There are also the occasional used furniture stores,but many of them have taken things a few steps further...and are now chic galleries with outrageous creations. The very smalI boutiques were filled with many sorts.. Apparently it is the latest thing, AGAIN. Vintage will always be searched out amongst the more audacious fashionistas. But Vintage makes sense for alot of us...Since the fiscal calamity many of us have been living amongst, and for the younger crowds, it is a good way to stretch your fashion euro....plus, this is one of the best ways to live green. It could take at least a day to visit them all, so plan for time and wear an easy- to -change into/out-of outfit, since many of these petit boutiques are just that PETIT!
